Best eCommerce Cart Solution - In Need Of The Suitable One - Why ...

Many of the web business men these days are in search of a reliable eCommerce cart solution for their internet business campaigns. Among other things, the online shopping cart is considered the most significant aspect of one?s internet business, because it is where sales and business activity are visible. Having a simple yet effective shopping cart software program, as a result, is vital in case a businessman wishes to really make the most out of his internet business venture.

Quite a few programs for ecommerce shopping cart integration have actually already been developed and made available, but many of them continue to call for a great deal of input from the user. These programs, at best, can take care of the standard of the online shopping cart transactions, such as secure transfers, confirmations and post-sales rejoinders.

What an enthusiastic entrepreneur needs, on the other hand, is something that can streamline the whole process and then make the job less difficult for him. With the common ecommerce cart solution, almost all of the other equally crucial factors of internet business are left out ? and those ?others? are the ones that really require a lots of attention to fully cover.

Very important internet marketing must-dos such as e mail broadcasts, autoresponders and the extra complex details of affiliate tracking, to name a few, are the ones that use up a majority of an internet-based entrepreneur?s time. These are also precisely the same elements that must be perfected and carefully explored, if a person looks to grow his internet business.

Certainly, one can significantly expand his business gains if these internet marketing strategies are dealt with correctly, and even more hot leads are made owing to them. In the internet business scenario, things that get people to pick up an online shopping cart are as significant to the business since the actual sales made on these online shopping carts.

For the web marketer, for this reason, the most beneficial eCommerce cart solution is one that can take care of every one of these other duties, as well. It has to be one that can function and take on every single one of these different factors of the online shopping cart system.

There?s an excellent system developed by 1automationwiz, that allows its users to completely make simpler and automate the ecommerce shopping cart system, thereby freeing him of the tiresome and time-consuming efforts of personally tracking affiliate sales performance, e mail follow ups and split-testing. This system is even plug and play, and can easily be coursed through and launched, which makes it well suited for those that like to set their internet businesses on autopilot.

Rinspeed gives Smart Fortwo ED two extra wheels, more junk in the trunk

Rinspeed gives Smart Fortwo ED two extra wheels, more junk in the trunk
Rinspeed is a Swiss speed shop that is perhaps best known for making rather outlandish concept cars, from glorified golf carts to Bond-inspired amphibious autos. And now the company has unveiled its latest creation, the Dock+Go, a "backpack" for your Smart Fortwo ED. Essentially, Rinspeed has modified an existing Fortwo EV so that it can connect an extra axle to its derriere, providing extra trunk space, a hot box for pizza delivery or even extra speakers and infotainment options. Not only that, but the automotive add-on also packs extra oomph to give your mini EV additional range with a built-in fuel cell, battery or ICE.

The Fourtwo that the Dock+Go mates with has itself gotten a bunch of show-worthy interior upgrades as well. It's got a 12.1-inch in-dash monitor, infotainment system from Harman with Aha radio and gesture control, plus an incredibly safe smartphone cradle built into the steering wheel to give the Smart's cockpit a second screen. Because it's a concept, you won't see the Dock+Go on the streets anytime soon, but you can see plenty more pictures of it at the source below. Oh, and should customer demand be sufficient, Rinspeed's in talks with manufacturers to make it happen. What say you, dear readers, does a Fortwo EV with a fatter caboose appeal to you?

Christchurch still 'safe haven' for quake survivor

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Jane Taylor was managing a women's clothing store in downtown Christchurch a year ago when the earthquake struck. She was dug from the rubble within minutes with horrific injuries ? her vertebrae were crushed, her skull was fractured and her pelvis smashed.

Like Taylor, many survivors of the Feb. 22 earthquake continue to feel the emotional and physical pain from the tragedy that left 185 people dead in New Zealand's worst natural disaster in 80 years. Yet they are also rediscovering what it means to be part of a family and a community, and life is settling into familiar rhythms.

Taylor was in the hospital for three months, at first in an induced coma. But the 54-year-old says that in the months since, she has found strength from those around her, and has never considered leaving Christchurch.

"It's our place of love," she told The Associated Press. "We've been privileged to get know fellow survivors, and each of us is inspired every day by each other."

In many ways, the city remains a mess, a testament of the fury unleashed by the magnitude-6.1 temblor. The business district is a giant construction site. Thousands of homeowners have been told to leave their land after the government deemed entire neighborhoods too unstable to repopulate. And significant aftershocks jolt people's confidence.

Yet, when Statistics New Zealand measured the population of Christchurch four months after the earthquake, it found it had declined by just 2.4 percent, down to 368,000.

Recalling that day, Taylor explained how she was in the store in the Cashel Street Mall when she felt a violent shaking and began running.

"The verandah upstairs basically landed on me," she said. "Big blocks of concrete. I was bent over like a staple, my bum on the ground and my head on my feet."

Two men dug her out from the rubble and moved her to a bench, but there was chaos all around and no way for an emergency vehicle to reach her.

"It was pretty shocking," she said. "There was debris falling, dust filling my mouth and nostrils, people screaming."

Taylor sat there for an hour, held upright at first by a friend and then by her husband, before a police car could get close and take her away.

After three months in the hospital and another three in physical therapy, she was able to walk unaided thanks to a titanium cage that doctors inserted to support her spine. These days, she has weakness in her pelvis and chronic pain but said she's proud of her recovery and full mobility.

Despite the continuing aftershocks, she said she considers Christchurch her "safe haven" thanks to her family and friends. She said she believes she developed the emotional strength to handle her injuries after her 18-year-old son Alex was killed by a drunk driver four years ago.

"Your priorities change after something like that, and you realize that it's your family and being together that's so important," Taylor said, adding that she and her husband, Shaun, "developed a closeness and a strength as a couple after that."

For others, there remains the lingering question: Why did I survive when so many others died?

Emily Cooper, 23, was a reporter on assignment at a local park when the quake struck. The Canterbury Television (CTV) building where she worked collapsed in the quake, accounting for a majority of the deaths from the quake ? 115. Among them were two people she considered close friends ? Rhys Brookbanks, 25, whom Cooper had known since journalism school, and Sam Gibb, 27, her producer at CTV.

"The guilt wasn't something that lasted just a few days after the quake. It lasted months and has never really gone away," Cooper said. "It's changed from guilt to confusion. I will never really understand why. I can't help but think, why me?"

Cooper has since left CTV and now works for a radio station. However, she said she feels compelled to stay in Christchurch and keep reporting the stories of the people there who are struggling to rebuild their lives.

One pair whose image resonated with people around the world that day are Kent and Elizabeth Manning, teenagers whose photo was captured at the moment an officer told them there was no hope of finding more survivors in the collapsed CTV building, where their mother, Donna Manning, was killed.

The teen's uncle, Maurice Gardiner, said that a year later, they are healing.

"Both Elizabeth and Kent have good days and bad days, as we all do, but they are getting on with their lives," he said. "Kent is back at high school and Lizzy is at work."

Gardiner said he was "very, very proud" of how the teens had coped with all the issues they faced after their mother's death, from figuring out where they would live (Manning was a single mother) to arranging memorials.

On the anniversary of the quake Wednesday, Gardiner said, the teens plan to bury their mother's ashes at a local cemetery. That, he said, may help bring some closure.

"One of the things that has come out of all this is that people spend a lot more time with each other," Gardiner said. "Not only with our family, but throughout the city. As we put things back together, we are very much looking after each other, caring for each other."

Advice to Overcome Your Dietary Challenges ? Article Squadron

Reducing weight is a personal battle. Whether or not you choose to do it with your friends, you?re in essence, battling your own personal body to see who will win. This article has some tactics that you can try as part of your goal to shed the excess weight once and for all.

In an effort to drop pounds the fastest you ought to eat only when you are hungry. Overindulgence in food can make it harder for you to lose weight. It is best that you eat only when you are hungry and not only when something smells or looks tasty. It?s also wise to avoid food because of boredom.

Take a walk around with a pedometer to make sure you will get enough exercise. A pedometer allows you to measure the distance you walk in a day, as well as quantity of steps you took. You should take a minimum of ten thousands steps per day. In case you are not taking enough steps, you need to find tactics to exercise more.

Exercising is really a proven method of weight loss, but many people don?t realize how helpful it really is to get a friend or family member ?buddy-up? with them when they are taking part in physical activities. An additional person provides motivation to continue with a task and provide helpful advice or share concerns.

Whatever weight-loss regimen you assemble, ensure it is one you will be able to stick with. Behind every goal to lose weight you can find a second, implicit goal: Keeping the weight off. To do this, you will need a routine that may be changed into a life-long process. Avoid harsh programs that are going to be unsustainable in the long run. Drain the fat from your meats like bacon and hamburger. Once they have cooked in the pan, drain off any excess fat as well as let the meat sit on a bed of paper towels for a couple minutes to absorb any excess fat left behind before you use them in a recipe. You will save a great deal of calories and fat by doing this.

Cutting carbs away from your diet while eating excess amounts of fat can help weight fall off. You will be able to still eat delicious foods like steak, avocados, cheese, and butter in very large quantities! Plus, once your body has gone into ketosis (the procedure of burning fat compared to storing it), you can cheat every now and then and eat sweets with sugar substitutes.

The rate of fat burning will probably be different for each person even if they should have similar body types or are doing an identical type of diet. Do not be turned away by the progress of other people but instead allow their progress to feed your motivation. By staying positive it?ll assist the entire experience. If you take the time, do the work and also have the information you need, you?ll be able to do anything, including losing the weight which you so desperately wish to lose. You have a skinny person within that is just waiting to get out. Like we have shown you here, there are a lot of practical things you can do, starting now, in order to make that happen.

Movie Review: 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' ? CBS Philly

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

Nicolas Cage just couldn?t give up the Ghost Rider.? Guess we?ll have to do it.

Cage returns as the title character plus one in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, a superhero-thriller followup to Ghost Rider that?s based on the Marvel comic of the same name.

1c2bd Movie Review: Ghost Rider: Spirit of VengeanceCage stars in this fantasy-action thriller in the double role of cursed Johnny Blaze and his flaming skull alter ego, Ghost Rider ? whose noggin bursts into flame when he?s sucking the soul out of an evildoer.? It?s the same pair Cage played in the surprisingly interesting and respectable 2007 original, one which was commercially successful enough to beg a second helping.

Unfortunately, this time not only is the element of novelty missing, but this outing displays the nearly inevitable sequelitis quality dropoff, making it seem rather obvious that they?ve now made one installment too many.

Blaze is a stunt biker who made a pact with the devil and sold his soul to save his dying father.? The Rider, whom he unwillingly transforms into when in the presence of evil, is the devil?s fiery bounty hunter, a curse that Johnny still struggles with.

He remains a metaphysical force with a flaming skull for a head, riding a motorcycle with wheels of fire, who has decided to use his powers to defend the innocent as a vengeful vigilante of justice.

Blaze is hiding out in self-imposed exile in remote Romania when the sequel begins, and is recruited by a secret sect of the church to save Danny, a young boy played by Fergus Riordan, from a demonic conspiracy.

In this adventure, Johnny Whitworth plays Roarke Carrigan, a human who is turned by the Devil into a supernatural critter named Blackout, who is given the abilities to do battle with Ghost Rider.

Idris Elba plays Moreau, an alcoholic rebel and biker with whom Blaze teams up in an effort to save Danny and perhaps rid himself of his curse once and for all.

Mephistopheles ? played this time by Ciaran Hinds, who replaces Peter Fonda from the prior outing ? is attempting to take over the body of his son on the lad?s birthday.

For directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is as much a reboot as a sequel.? It?s been shot, edited, acted, and scored as if everyone involved realizes just how shallow the subject matter is.

The directors have done a lot more location shooting than was done on the first film, and considerable additional stunt work as well.

But this time, the CGI fiery-skull effects don?t contribute to the story: they are the story.? And a yawningly flimsy one at that.

The uncaged Cage, who brought an admirably restrained version of his oddball style and dry humor to the first installment, has been prolific since Ghost Rider but has appeared in far more downs (National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Next, Bangkok Dangerous, The Sorcerer?s Apprentice, Trespass) than ups ( Knowing, Kick-Ass).

In this outing, he does what he can with his self-consciously idiosyncratic line readings, but he?s working much too hard to distract us from the realization that this time there?s no there there.

The juvenile screenplay by David S. Goyer, Scott Gimple, and Seth Hoffman showcases the title character?s supernatural exploits in a straightforward protect-an-innocent-child plot.

But, unlike its predecessor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance does not boast the courage of its kooky comic-book convictions.? We?ve got Ghost Rider again and plenty of vengeance.? But spirit??? Nowhere to be found.

So we?ll light a fire under 1? stars out of 4. The sorta-superhero sorta-sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, once again presents Nicolas Cage and a flaming skull as a match made in hell.?? This time we agree.

Top bargainers announce payroll tax cut deal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Relieved congressional bargainers say they've reached agreement on compromise legislation extending payroll tax cuts and benefits for the long-term unemployed through 2012, edging a white-hot political battle a major step closer to finally being resolved.

Rep. David Camp, R-Mich., and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the two top negotiators, strode from a conference room minutes after midnight Thursday to say that only technical issues and the drafting of legislative language remained. The bill would assure a continued tax cut for 160 million workers and jobless benefits for several million others, delivering top election-year priorities for President Barack Obama.

"It's a very good deal for the country," said Baucus, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee.

There were disconcerting hints that last-minute problems might still crop up. Neither Baucus nor Camp would predict whether Congress would approve the legislation by Friday, the original goal. And aides did not distribute summaries of the bill to reporters, which is usually routine when major accords are reached.

Even so, Baucus and Camp ? and a handful of other lawmakers who helped craft the package ? expressed confidence that their work on the roughly $150 billion measure was virtually complete.

"We're moving forward," said Camp, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee.

The temporary payroll tax cut and extra unemployment coverage initially ran into GOP resistance, some of which lingers.

But Republicans have largely concluded that it would be politically damaging to oppose the package, particularly in this presidential and congressional election year. That contrasted with December, when House Republicans refused to back a bipartisan Senate bill providing a two-month extension of the tax cuts and jobless benefits while bargainers completed a yearlong deal ? only to retreat under barrages of criticism from Republicans and conservatives around the country.

Underscoring that they had learned the consequences of seeming to block a middle-class tax cut, House Republicans removed the major hurdle to the legislation earlier this week when they agreed that the payroll tax cut ? comprising about two-thirds of the measure's cost ? would not have to be paid for with spending cuts.

The bargainers spent Wednesday trying to extinguish last-minute brushfires as some members of Congress sought changes in a tentative agreement that aides had described Tuesday.

Chief among the late disputes was a proposal to save around $15 billion ? about half the $30 billion cost of the bill's extended jobless benefits ? by requiring federal workers to contribute an additional 1.5 percent of their pay to their pensions.

Democrats, including Sen. Ben Cardin and others from Maryland, home to many government employees, resisted that plan, holding up a final handshake among congressional bargainers. The provision was ultimately changed to target the boost only at newly hired federal workers, requiring them to contribute 2.3 percent of their salaries toward defined benefit pensions.

There was little controversy over the main thrust of the bill.

A 2-percentage-point cut in the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax, which is deducted from workers' paychecks, would run through 2012. For a family earning $50,000 a year, the cut saves them $1,000 annually.

Extra unemployment benefits for people out of work the longest would be extended for the same period, and a 27 percent slash in federal reimbursements for physicians who treat Medicare patients would be averted.

Unless Congress acts, the tax cut and added jobless benefits would expire and doctors' Medicare payments would be reduced ? all on March 1.

In a GOP win, the bill would phase down the current maximum 99 weeks of jobless coverage to 73 weeks in the hardest-hit states by autumn, though most states would get no more than 63 weeks.

Besides increasing new federal workers' pension contributions, more savings were supposed to come from government sales of parts of the broadcast spectrum to wireless companies. The spectrum auction was supposed to raise about $15 billion ? even after $7 billion would be spent for a new communications network for emergency workers.

The government's main welfare program would be continued through this year. Republicans won a provision barring welfare recipients from using their electronic cards to withdraw cash from teller machines in liquor stores, strip clubs and casinos.

The $20 billion price tag for preventing the cut in doctors' Medicare reimbursements would be covered partly by trimming a fund Obama's health care overhaul created to help prevent obesity and smoking. There would also be reductions in Medicaid payments to hospitals that treat high numbers of uninsured patients.

Dropped from the final compromise were proposals to renew expiring business tax cuts; a GOP plan to require unemployment recipients to work toward high school equivalency diplomas; and another Republican provision, aimed at illegal immigrants, requiring low-income people to have Social Security numbers before they can get checks from the Internal Revenue Service for the children's tax credit.

Abraham Lincoln, vampire hunter? What if it were true? (+video)

In the new movie, 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,' Honest Abe learns that vampires are behind slavery. He gets himself elected president and fights the Civil War to end the fang-toothed scourge.

Abraham Lincoln?s been called a lot of things: Honest Abe, Father Abraham, the Great Emancipator, the Rail Splitter, even The Ancient One. But Abraham?Lincoln, Vampire Hunter? That?s a not one park rangers at the Lincoln Memorial commonly use.

Yet a new horror/history movie ?Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? opens June 22, and if the just-released trailer is any guide, it?s going to be a blockbuster. Think Stephen King meets Doris Kearns Goodwin, as filmed by Wes Craven, with a reincarnated Fess Parker in the starring role.

OK, that?s not exactly the movie?s provenance. It?s from a book of the same name, by Seth Grahame-Smith. Benjamin Walker plays Abe.

Mr. Grahame-Smith also wrote ?Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,? which we could never convince our book group to read.?

The Vampire Hunter story?is that Abe?s mother dies mysteriously, apparently due to some supernatural cause. He eventually learns that vampires are behind the South?s system of slavery. He gets himself elected president and fights the Civil War to end the fang-toothed scourge. Ax-related mayhem ensues.

Lest we of the Pundit?s Club get uppity about this alleged desecration of our 16th president?s true story, the Abe/vampire mash-up is getting a cautionary OK from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill., according to the Los Angeles Times. Library staff members have been treated to an extended viewing of scenes from the upcoming film.

?We enjoyed it?, museum spokesman Dave Blanchett told the Times.

This got us to thinking: What if Lincoln really was a vampire hunter? That would explain some things about his personal history that historians argue over today.

His Moods

Lincoln?s tendency to melancholy and black moods was well known in his lifetime. What was the source of this personality trait? If he was worried about vampires, that would explain a lot.

His Strength

Lincoln?s body was unusually shaped, with long arms, a tall frame, and so forth. In the modern era some have tried to link him with various physical conditions that resulted in an odd body shape. But if he was swinging an ax constantly to ward off evil, wouldn?t he develop into an unusually strong chief executive.

His Tenacity

Lincoln was a gentle man who fought the Civil War ferociously, accepting nothing but total victory. This made sense if he wanted to ensure the Union?s survival and the death of slavery. It would also make sense if he needed to ensure that vampires would flee the US to other continents.

Also, if it?s successful, ?Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? could open up a whole new film genre: the wonky horror film. Think ?I Know What You Did Last Sequestration,? ?The Blair House Witch Project,? or ?Scream 5: The GOP Debates Continue.?

Got any suggestions for Washington ?horror movies of your own? Tweet them my way. Maybe we can get a hashtag going. #realscaryDC, anyone?

Lake Vostok: LIfe May Be Found Under Antarctic Ice Sheet

* Russian expedition says broke through to lake on Feb. 5
* Scientists suspect lake hides unknown life forms
* Say harsh environment holds clues to life on other planets
* Drilling into subglacial lakes raises contamination fears
By Alissa de Carbonnel
MOSCOW, Feb 13 (Reuters) - The race is on to discover life in the most remote and extreme environment known on Earth.
Russia has set the pace, piercing through Antarctica's icy crust to reach a freshwater lake to try to find ancient or new kinds of life that have adapted to the extremely cold, sunless climate and may shed light on the origins of evolution.
Scientists from the United States and Britain are close on Moscow's heels, sure that their technology will speed analysis of the depths, hidden away for tens of millions of years.
If life is found in the icy darkness, it will provide the best answer yet to whether life can exist on other planets like Mars, Jupiter's moon Europa or Saturn's satellite Enceladus.
"It's like the first flight to the Moon," said Valery Lukin, head of the Russian Antarctic mission, comparing the achievement to the U.S. space race victory over the Soviet Union in 1969.
After 20 years of stop-go drilling, Russia was the first to pierce through 3,769 metres (12,365 ft) of solid ice to Lake Vostok - the largest and most isolated of over 350 known subglacial lakes, untouched for some 15-25 million years.
But the drilling technology it used means Russian scientists will have to go back to collect frozen samples of the lake water for analysis in 2013.
That leaves the door open for U.S. or British scientists to steal the lead. Both teams will be equipped with microscopes, enabling them to analyse the freshwater samples each expedition will bring up from two other shallower subglacial lakes.
Both will also head to the bottom of the world in the next Antarctic summer from mid-October this year until February; the British team to lake Ellsworth, the Americans to lake Whillans.
"They have broken through the ice, opened a window to that world, so we can all more or less follow suit and now do some real science," said John Priscu, a scientist with the U.S. Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling (WISSARD) mission.
"Most of the drill is on a vessel right now, so it's on its way," he said.
"The United States programme will have microscopes in the field ... We should know what is there as we sample it," said Priscu, who suspects an oasis of life may lurk under the featureless white, possibly teeming around thermal vents.
Unlike the U.S. and British programmes, Russia will have to take a sample of frozen water from the lake home for analysis.
SCIENTIFIC EXPLORERS
A century after the first expeditions to the South Pole, the discovery of Antarctica's hidden network of subglacial lakes via satellite imagery in the late 1990s set off a new exploratory fervour among scientists the world over, who say the ice cap acts like a blanket trapping the Earth's geothermal heat.
Priscu and British mission scientists denied it was a race, saying they were exploring different Antarctic lakes.
But scientists say there is an undeniable draw to be at the cusp of such a discovery.
"We are scientific explorers," said Martin Siegert, head of the University of Edinburgh's School of Geosciences who is leading the British expedition. "Science is driven by competition, people want to be the first to do things."
Russia has dreamed of dipping a toe into the mysterious Lake Vostok - the world's third largest body of water - since discovering its Soviet-era Antarctic station sat above it.
"This is a great event," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Friday, congratulating the Lake Vostok expedition.
Presented with a cup of water from the melted borehole ice, Putin joked it was a drink fit for dinosaurs.
Despite the success, a bitterness lingers among Russian scientists that they were forced to suspend drilling for years over international criticism of their environmental standards.
To answer concerns that drilling fluid could pollute the pristine lake, the Russian team engineered new technology.
The Russian borehole, pumped full of kerosene and anti-freeze, hangs like a needle over the lake. But Russia says it used a smaller drill to punch through the last metres, then immediately withdrew it to allow the lake water to percolate up the borehole and freeze there, creating a frozen plug.
"I can say that absolutely nothing fell into the lake," said Nikolai Vasilyev, who led a team from the St Petersburg Mining University to operate the drilling.
Speaking by satellite phone from aboard the Russian icebreaker, the Akademik Fyodorov, Vasilyev said the last hours of drilling were particularly tense.
When the breakthrough came after years of work in one of the coldest spots on Earth, it was just hours before the last Feb. 6 flight out before the onset of Antarctica's winter - where the coldest temperature on Earth was recorded of minus 89.2 Celsius (minus 128.6 Fahrenheit).
"We finished at night and the plane was to fly the next day so it was very tense," Vasilyev said. "It is very, very difficult work. Every centimetre is a step towards something new and unknown."
MICROBE SOUP
By contrast, the U.S. and British missions will drill with hot water from melted glacier ice that is filtered and UV radiated, which they say is environmental safer.
"The other reason we use it is it's quick," Siegert said.
Where as Russia spent years mechanically chewing through thick ice crystals to reach Lake Vostok, Siegert says it will take his team three days to melt down to lake Ellsworth.
The British expedition will then immediately deploy a probe into the lake to collect samples of the water columns and of the bottom sediment. It will have only 24-36 hours to run research before the drill hole freezes up again.
Lukin, however, said he has his doubts over the technology - concerns Russia may put to the U.S. and British missions at the next international panel of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in June.
"Imagine the ancient water of Lake Ellsworth: It is absolutely untouched. Maybe there is life there and a pot of boiling water is poured in," Lukin said.
"Do we want to study micro-biodiversity or microbe soup?"
In the future, Russian researchers also plan to explore Lake Vostok with a submersible, he said.
The space exploration metaphors are not incidental. Studies of Antarctica's subglacial lakes also offer insights into the search for life beyond Earth, both in terms of technology, such as drilling and contamination controls, as well as how life evolves and what makes for habitable environments.
"Space is very much an integral part of the subglacial lake programme as a next step," said microbiologist David Pearce with the British Antarctic Survey.
Scientists say they suspect the Antarctic waters are supersaturated with oxygen and other gases and may be home to bacteria and single-celled microorganisms called archea.
They say that even if the dark waters under Antarctic prove barren, it will be a cutting-edge discovery: The only known sterile place on the planet.
"It is learning about the limits of the terrestrial biosphere," said astrobiologist Charles Cockell of the Open University.
"Ultimately who gets the samples really doesn't matter." (Additional reporting by Irene Klotz; Editing by Elizabeth Piper)

Should Republicans Be Alarmed by the Low Turnout? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | State after state in the Republican nomination shows an incredible amount of apathy among GOP voters. The fractions of registered Republicans showing up are frighteningly small. When compared to Republican candidates and voting patterns in 2008, the trend is even scarier for the GOP. The question is why this is happening, and whether the nominee has any chance to defeat Barack Obama.

The anemic numbers from Iowa and New Hampshire have been noted, as have the huge gap between voters in Florida and Nevada compared to the turnout in 2008. But now to the list of dramatically lower turnout we must add the states that held their primaries on Feb. 7 (Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri) and Saturday (Maine). Only South Carolina has shown any measure of political excitement this primary season.

Myth 1: Everyone Is Staying Home Because They Think Romney Has Wrapped It Up.

That myth was advanced by Ari Fleischer and John Sununu. But turnout was at its highest after the New Hampshire primary, when Romney looked the most dominant. Even when polls showed a tight contest between Romney and Rick Santorum, turnout was almost 50 percent lower than in 2008 in Colorado.

Myth 2: It's The Weather That Is To Blame For The Low Turnouts.

One county in Maine (Washington), "had to cancel" its caucus (as Ron Paul supporters cried foul) due to bad weather, but that affected only 200 voters. Out of the 258,000 registered Republicans in Maine, only about 2 percent showed up Saturday . It's not as though the Midwest and New England states are only holding their elections in the winter this year. What explains Florida's low turnout? You can't hang this one on Mother Nature.

Myth 3: At Least The 2012 Choice Of Candidates Isn't As Bad As 2008

Actually, the Republicans should yearn for those 2008 candidates. Nearly two-thirds of GOP voters in 2008 rated their candidates as excellent or good, while less than 50 percent do so in 2012 . The field of Romney, Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul just don't stack up to John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson, according to Republican voters. And in 2008, Republican candidates were weighed down by an unpopular incumbent in office. In 2012, Republicans face what should be a beatable incumbent, yet can't seem to ignite much passion in their own voters.

Myth 4: At Least More Republicans Are Voting In Primaries Than Democrats.

In fact, the opposite might well be the case. Democrats have higher enthusiasm levels than Republicans, even when President Barack Obama's approval ratings plummeted after his inauguration. More voters participated in the uncontested Colorado Democratic Party Primary (80,000) than showed up at the hotly contested Colorado Republican Party Primary (65,000, or perhaps even lower), according to The Guardian. If that's not a danger sign for the GOP, I don't know what is.

(AP) ? Japan's economy shrank at an annual pace of 2.3 percent in the fourth quarter as manufacturers were battered by the strong yen, weak export demand amid the European debt crisis and flooding in Thailand.

A drop in public investment during the quarter, due largely to political bickering delaying parliamentary approval for a 12 trillion yen ($156 billion) extra budget for tsunami reconstruction, also contributed to the year-on-year decline reported Monday.

The world's No. 3 economy should get a boost once that rebuilding money kicks in, but the outlook for the country's vital exporters remains unclear, said Masayuki Kichikawa, chief Japan economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

"This should be viewed as temporary setback," Kichikawa said. "To what extent will the European crisis continue to affect overseas demand ? that is the big question."

Japan's major manufacturers, such as Sony Corp. to Honda Motor Co., were hit badly during the fourth quarter by a drop in export demand and flooding in Thailand, a regional factory and supply base, which disrupted their production.

Those problems arose just as many exporters appeared to have recovered from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which interrupted their manufacturing at home.

Japan last month reported its first trade deficit since 1980, reflecting broader changes in its economy as manufacturers shift production overseas to escape the strong yen and be closer to their markets. But the Thai flooding underlined that basing production overseas also has risks.

The drop in gross domestic product was worse than expected. Economists polled by Kyodo News agency projected a 1.4 percent decline.

Compared to the previous quarter, October-December GDP fell 0.6 percent, the Cabinet Office said. At an annual pace, the economy would shrink 2.3 percent. The contraction comes after 1.7 percent increase in the July-September quarter, reflecting some recovery after the tsunami disaster.

Domestic private consumption, which accounts for over half the economy, edged up 0.3 percent from the previous quarter, the data showed.

Corporate capital investment rose 1.9 percent, while private housing investment fell 0.8 percent and public investment declined 2.5 percent.

Along the tsunami-battered coast, most of the debris has been cleared away, but rebuilding has yet to begin in many towns and communities as local leaders finalize reconstruction plans. Reconstruction is expected to stimulate economic growth, although export demand still appears weak.

"The growth rate will turn positive and stay positive this year because reconstruction demand will continue to push up GDP," said Kichikawa. "But the pace of growth will depend on whether the decline in exports will stabilize."

Economy and fiscal policy minister Motohisa Furukawa said in a statement that exports and production increased in December in a "rebound to the impact of flooding in Thailand."

"If we take into account these factors and look at the overall economic situation, we can say that upward movement is continuing," he said.

Furukawa also said that the U.S. economy is moderately recovering and global business sentiment is improving.

"We expect steady increase of exports amid moderate improvement of the global economy," he said. "However, we need to be fully aware of the downside risk."

For all of 2011, Japan's economy contracted 0.9 percent from 2010, when GDP grew a robust 4.4 percent. In 2009, the economy shrank 5.5 percent in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Cisco Unified Communications Manager - All VoIP News

First off, Cius is not a consumer tablet. Actually, it's only available through the Cisco partner network at a price of less than $750 for the endpoint and less than $350 for the media station, for a total of pursuant to this agreement $1,100. That is, if you're just looking to read a book on the beach, pick up a Kindle Fire for $199.

The Cius for consumer-oriented functions

That's not to say you can't use the Cius for consumer-oriented functions, however to get the full benefit of Cius's rich set of collaboration and productivity features, the device needs to be connected to Cisco Unified Communications Manager on the backend.

We found that the Cius is a carefully thought-out video-phone/cum tablet endpoint with many best-of-breed internals, like 4G speed, and a docking station with purpose.

The Cius unit is based on Android

The Cius unit is based on Android, and the initial basic appearance was that of most other generic Android tablets. Based on our prior test of enterprise tablets, the Cius reminded us of the Fujitsu Stylist. That's where superficial comparisons end, nevertheless, as Cius's software payload, with collaborative emphasis and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)/conferencing accessorizing, is huge.

The tablet size is small, with a screen size of just 7 inches - though it supports 1280x600 HD video at 30 frames per second, and it weighs less than 2 pounds. It has front and backside cameras, and is powered by an Intel Atom CPU with a gig of RAM. The Cius docking station we saw had audio, and props the unit into an angled viewing position to fulfill one of the Cisco-stated missions of the Cius unit: Video conferencing and/or VoIP - collaboration is the theme.

Cius's compatibility with Cisco's Unified Communications management layer means you can enforce security policies and manage applications. You can change the battery in seconds, we found. Differing capacities of storage are available.

We saw plenty of jacks. There's a mini-HDMI jack that was used to power large screen displays while our demo, a micro-USB jack, and an SD card jack. There's as well an Ethernet jack - something that's missing from most of the "business-focused" tablets we've seen so far.

With all of the jacks, and a memory port, one questions if users can access root or violate policies that might cause compliance or conformance problems. Cisco was all over that question. Through Cisco's secure boot and Unified Communications management, Cisco offers mobile device management with lengthy use policies, giving administrators a lot of options.

Our hacking challenge instincts were twigged. Could MDM controls be thwarted? On top of Cisco's MDM controls are ActiveSync controls which join Outlook and Microsoft Exchange administrative controls to the Cius. There are, in a word, two ways to control Cius user behavior: with Cisco's Unified Communications elements and Microsoft ActiveSync.

Cius is all about collaboration, according to Cisco, and the applications we saw follow this theme. The base Cius software load includes Cisco's WebEx application, along with Jabber. WebEx is familiar to the corporate world as a heterogeneous operating systems-compatible conferencing application with VoIP capabilities.

The bundled software applications are as well designed to manage contacts with on-screen push buttons to rapidly "dial" or choose participants for conversations, a bow to the endless milieu of corporate business meetings - nevertheless these are online or rather than face-to-face.

Cius apps are Android apps, even though they're accessed through a Cisco Android marketplace called AppHQ. This walled-garden approach to accessing applications allows administrators to impose constraints.

Lot of purpose into its smallish 7-inch tablet

Cisco packs a lot of purpose into its smallish 7-inch tablet. This is not for consumers, even though all of the typical tablet entertainment apps will probably work-if they're allowed. The Cius is a business-focused tablet that delivers mobile collaboration for enterprises.
