SpectrumCo LLC is a wireless service provider and is a joint venture of Comcast Corporation, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Sprint Nextel Communications and others.? In 2006 they bought 137 wireless spectrum licenses in an FCC auction.? Verizon wireless is now trying to buy some of those licenses.
SpectrumCo probably bought the licenses for the cable companies to expand into wireless services and for Sprint?s future 4G LTE network.? It looks like the cable companies decided to stay out of the wireless business, and were selling the licenses.
The FCC has not yet approved the sale.? To make matters worse for Verizon, the unions are trying to stop the sale.
The CWA (Communications Workers of America) and the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) have started a press campaign to garner public and government attention to this.? One of the points is they believe Verizon Communications will stop expanding their FiOS network.
The unions stated in a press release ?If approved by the Federal Communications Commission, the deal would effectively result in an unchecked monopoly by the nation?s largest cable and wireless companies over the telecommunications industry, killing thousands of jobs, ending competition, raising prices for consumers, lowering service quality and discontinuing the development of high-speed internet infrastructure. The proposed deal will end the build-out of Verizon FiOS, the only all-fiber optic commercial network in America, ending cable competition.?
Well, Broadband Expert says this is old news.? Verizon Communications had decided not to expand its FiOS in new markets.? They will, however continue FiOS in markets where they have already penetrated.
For the areas where Verizon is not building out the FiOS, Verizon Wireless will be enhancing the 4G LTE networks to deliver the broadband services.? Surprise!? It looks like there will be some more jobs in the wireless side.
