Video shows Zimmerman shortly after Martin shooting

Does surveillance video of George Zimmerman in police custody on the night of Trayvon Martin's death contradict claims that he was beaten and bloodied during an altercation with the Florida teen? NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By msnbc.com staff

Updated at 7:09 a.m. ET: Surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman being led from a police car shortly after he fatally shot teenager Trayvon Martin does not appear to show any injuries or bloodstains, but his attorney says the video is too grainy to be revealing.

The footage, obtained by ABC News?on Wednesday, shows a handcuffed Zimmerman getting out of the police car unaided and walking into the police station where he was taken after the shooting in Sanford, Fla.

It was taken about four hours after the deadly incident.?

There are no visible signs of injuries to Zimmerman's head or blood on his clothes. However,?he is wearing a red jacket, which could obscure blood stains.

Appearing on NBC's TODAY on Thursday, Zimmerman's attorney Craig Sonner described the video as "very grainy." He also pointed out that Zimmerman had been "cleaned-up" and received first aid in the four hours between the incident and Zimmerman's videotaped arrival at the police station.

Sonner has previously said that his client suffered a broken nose and a gash to his head during the altercation.

George Zimmerman's attorney, Craig Sonner, tells TODAY's Matt Lauer that a video of George Zimmerman taken after the killing of Trayvon Martin is too grainy to show whether he had any blood or bruises on his face.

Neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman, 28, who was released without charge,?claims he shot dead?the 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 in self-defense after the teen attacked him.

Eugene O'Donnell, of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said the video shows "that it's beyond dispute that there are no serious injuries, physical injuries, he's not in a hospital."

"There's no bruising that's observable," O'Donnell told MSNBC TV's?The Last Word.?However, he added that "it's possible that there are injuries that are not seen in the video."

Richard Kurtz, the funeral director who?prepared Martin's body, was asked if there were any signs on his hands that he had punched someone.

"The only thing that I was able to see was the gunshot wound," Kurtz told The Last Word. "I could not see evidence like he had been punching somebody as the news media say he was punching ... It just did not add up to me."

The death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman has ignited a national conversation about prejudice, justice and the treatment of young African-American men. NBC News anchors, correspondents and contributors discuss the feelings that Trayvon's death sparked and relate their experiences covering the story.

Europe travel: Best money-saving tips

Eyeswideopen/Getty Images

Experience the grand cities, amazing architecture, cultural attractions and natural beauty of the Old Continent.

By Stirling Kelso, Travel + Leisure

American travelers may have felt betrayed by their national currency over the past five years, but the dollar is finally gaining some ground. Its value against the euro increased 9.2 percent between January 2010 and January 2012.

Slideshow: See all the ways to save money in Europe

Pair a stronger dollar with unsteady European economies, as well as growing tourist markets and emerging destinations, and the happy conclusion is this: Europe travel can be affordable again, and not always where you expect it.

In Berlin, a slew of new hotels ? the city currently has 30,000 more hotel beds than New York City ? is creating competition and driving down prices (the average room rate is about $111 per night). And here?s a money-saving tip: Berlin recently introduced the Berlin Welcome Card, which covers two days of public transportation and admission to more than 160 urban attractions for $22.75.

The Berlin Brandenburg International Airport opens in June and will have new routes to up-and-coming Eastern European destinations. Cities such as Bucharest, Romania, and Zagreb, Croatia, are great values (hotel rates in both cities decreased 20 percent in 2011). Americans will also be pleased by the cost of visiting Hungary; the dollar is up 25 percent against the Hungarian forint since July 2011.

Tourists enjoy Iceland's Blue Lagoon, which collects waters from natural hot springs.

To the west, Iceland continues to be a savings hub for Europe travel. Icelandair flies from the U.S. to Continental Europe with stops in Reykjavik; packages ? some as low as $80 for hotels, meals, and spa treatments ? encourage overnight stays.

Americans were the second biggest growth market to Portugal in 2011 (after Brazil), where eating out in Lisbon, for instance, costs a fraction of what it does in other European capitals. ?Its appeal is similar to that of Spain and Italy but at much better value,? notes?travel agent Judy Nussbaum.

Any true Italy addicts can take some comfort that a stronger dollar will help in Florence and Venice. But to really stretch your travel budget in Italy, veer off the beaten path to regions like Puglia, where you?ll be rewarded with more than freshly made pasta and century-old olive groves.

Pink Slime, Deconstructed

?I don?t eat school lunch anyway . . . It looks weird.?

LFTB production; blaze.com

LFTB production; blaze.com

This is from a high school student, quoted in the New York Times over the weekend, in response to a seemingly ?beefless? future in school cafeterias. Most of the recent media outcry surrounds ?pink slime,? the low-fat filler used to bulk up many processed meats. Coverage focuses on schools, where parents and administrators alike worry about students? exposure to ?chemically-treated? foodstuffs and poorly-labeled processed meat.

The low-cost, nutritious school lunch has long been an American institution. Smaller school budgets and larger student populations have led to schools cutting costs wherever possible. When industrial beef producers suggested a newer, cheaper?meat alternative back in the early ?90s, cash-strapped school districts happily agreed.

In 2010, Michael Moss of the New York Times won a Pulitzer for reports probing the processing end of the beef industry. He was among the first to explore the sterilization process, microbial testing, and potential contamination recalls over the past decade. Today, more journalists, along with celebrity chefs, moms, and school officials have all taken up torches and pitchforks against ?pink slime?. Online articles address a myriad of questions: Where does this product come from, and where does it end up? Is it OK to eat? Why aren?t all the ingredients labeled? How is it made, anyway?

But thus far, no one has really satiated my curiosity?what, exactly, is ?pink slime??

What Pink Slime Is, and What It?s Not

Let?s address the name ? there?s undeniably an ??ick factor??ever heard anyone use [slime] in a positive way?? (Borrowing a pithy phrase from Deborah Blum, who covered the subject for Discover Blogs)

Well, if you come from the meat producers? camp, you instead refer to ?slime? as lean, finely-textured beef, or LFTB.?Connective tissue, trimmings, and scraps from industrial butcher plants are mixed in a large steel reactor, where technicians heat the mixture to 100 oF, initiating tissue lysis ? fats and oils begin to rise up, while thicker bits like protein sink. After a spin on the centrifuge to separate these components, lean, squishy pink goo emerges. Ammonium hydroxide ? ammonia dissolved partially in water ? sterilizes the resulting mass against microbes such as?E. coli or Salmonella. (Side Note: a similar product, finely textured beef, uses citric acid in place of ammonia to eliminate pathogens). Once extruded, the ?slime? can be blended into hamburger, hot dogs, and other products, or frozen into pellets for shipping and storage.

But, is it nutritious? Consumers can certainly make valid arguments regarding LFTB?s content: there?s less overall ?functional? protein than that found in other meat products. An analysis conducted at Iowa State University (A.S. Leaflet R1361) found two-and-a-half times more insoluble protein (77% vs. 30%) relative to soluble proteins in ordinary ground chuck. Nutritionally, our gut bacteria digest much of what we cannot, but there?s a good bet that we can?t get as much value from insoluble proteins (collagen and elastin, found largely in tendons, ligaments, and cartilage) as from their soluble siblings (myosin and actin, usually associated with muscle tissues). While these proteins may be hard to digest, on the plus side, there?s less fat in LFTB (~5%) than standard ground chuck (15-20%).

For those revolted by these contents, or even the thought of anything referred to as ?slime? crossing their plates, I have two comments: first, consider Jell-O. The packaging only lists a single ingredient, which reads: gelatin. If you were to tell a child that ?gummy worms? and other wobbly treats were made from steamed animal bones, would they really want dessert?

Second, consider checking the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), the U.S. Gov?t standards used to coordinate aspects of daily life ranging from taxes to farming. In 9CFR 301.2, a collection of terms used in the meat packaging industry, we see the following definition for meat:

?The part of the muscle of any cattle, sheep, swine, or goats, which is skeletal or which is found in the tongue, diaphragm, heart, or esophagus, with or without the accompanying or overlying fat, and the portions of bone?skin, sinew, nerve, and blood vessels which normally accompany the muscle tissue, and are not separated from it in the process of dressing.?

Pretty gruesome reading, true, but realize that this explanation covers everything bought at the butcher, so think carefully when considering catch-all meat products like grounds, mush, pastes, or loaves. In this light, ?slime? doesn?t seem half as bad; as a culture, we?ve implicitly agreed that throat, blood, and tendons are already on the menu.

Ammonia and Other Additives

Since we?re checking the CFR, let?s consider all the other approved meat additives we encounter there. Mosey on over to 9CFR 424.21 to find a table, no less than 20 pages in length, of all the allowable additives used in meat processing: tenderizers, emulsifiers, denuders, binders, bleaching agents, and sweeteners, all on display for the discerning diner?s palate. Compared to ?pink slime? seeing only brief ammonia exposure, I?m more inclined to be suspicious of sausage.

Speaking of additives, what about the ammonium hydroxide? As Blum points out, you?ve eaten it before: close molecular cousins ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and ammonium phosphate [(NH4)3PO4] are found in licorice and breads, respectively. Plant proteins like pectins and glutens are commonly treated with ammonia for various food applications. I?m less concerned with the ammonia treatment, but more with just how much ammonia a single batch of LFTB requires to make it ?safe.? Levels high enough to raise the product pH to about 9.00 rid the beef of most virulent microorganisms, but batches tested by the New York Times back in 2009 showed pH levels as low as 7.75. So what, that?s not a huge difference, right? The pH scale tracks logarithmically, so a one unit variance actually corresponds to 10 times less ammonia, which might reduce odor but also increases potential bacterial contamination.

Contrary to some news reports, ammonia is not a ?pink chemical,? it?s colorless. Nor does the level of ammonia in meat even approach that found in floor cleaners. For my money, a more worrisome butcher?s helper comes from an entirely different source ? carbon monoxide, which when applied to beef binds to the myoglobin and causes the tissue to develop the reassuring pink color consumers associate with freshness and quality.

One last safety note ? perhaps the few examples of contamination detected really are outliers. Click here for the 40-page USDA checklist meat producers must complete to assess their sterilization measures. This document addresses all production activities, including testing regimens, sampling size, antiseptic washes, lot documentation, and cross-contamination checks. USDA even establishes a maximum target of 0.2% for lot checking; or a tolerance of 2 per thousand lots produced with positive tests (in 2007, positive tests had crept up too high, and USDA cracked down. Higher numbers of failed tests were also noted in Moss?s 2009 Times article). Surprisingly, a chart buried near the middle (p.13) of the checklist indicates that processed beef has a lower overall risk of bacterial contamination relative to standard raw beef.

?That?s the thing?it isn?t freaking labeled.?

Healthy food, healthy kid; USDA

Healthy food, healthy kid; USDA

Microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein, a meat industry critic and the man whose 2002 email inadvertently coined the term ?pink slime,? delivered this rebuttal in a Reuters interview this past weekend. Under current regulations, LFTB does not have to be disclosed separately on labels, with the caveat that USDA allows a 15% maximum of the stuff in any product. However, a generation of parents accustomed to fighting high-fructose corn syrup and artificial dyes argue for inclusion of, at least, ammonia in the final ingredient list. Since manufacturers (and the USDA) consider this a production step, it, too, doesn?t need to be discretely mentioned.

So, besides loose labeling and chemical treatment, what is it about this processed meat that so unnerves customers? Certainly, it doesn?t look like a traditional cut anymore, but then neither does hamburger. The ?slime? moniker doesn?t help matters, nor its public unfamiliarity ? slicing animals into sections has a long history in human culture, but secondary processing of the remains is more recent. Blame cultural context: while steaks, chops, and ribs are on menus everywhere, LFTB is not. Perhaps we haven?t had time to adapt. Yet processed food still fills a necessary societal role ? it?s widely available, inexpensive, and can be fortified with nutrients and vitamins.

But is LFTB really food anymore? I would say yes, in the same way those byproducts from any other organism that we consume are. Surely, most people realize that we set our table every day thanks to the labors of other life forms: honey, from bee regurgitation, yogurt, from bacterial metabolism, and multiple cheeses from calf enzymes (rennets) or via fungal decomposition. Cochineal, a crimson dye still used to color meat products (9CFR, p. 624), comes from the dried, crushed bodies of millions of tiny insects. But, compared to insects and microbes, cows hit closer to home somehow, so we revolt at a meat byproduct we don?t recognize.

So, for my final thoughts: to the beef industry, clearer labeling and heightened public awareness would help to quash some of the squeamishness at LFTB?s inclusion in the food pantheon. And to the schools and parents, well-documented and tested LFTB doesn?t seem to be much more harmful, albeit less nutritious, than the Jell-O we already serve at dessert.

Enjoy your school lunch. Bon app?tit!

After several of the state?s largest unions withdrew donations to a Hispanic legislative conference in Albany this weekend, Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg are making up the difference.

Both the state and city teachers? unions pulled funding for the conference, known as SOMOS, after the legislature approved a new pension tier for new city and state employees.

In a joint statement Thursday, the mayor and the governor criticized the move, saying, ?We think the unions' actions are unfortunate, and don't want the conference to suffer as a result.?

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew had harsh words for both executives.

"The mayor and the governor can?t get around one fact: a middle of the night, sleazy backroom deal with gerrymandered districts and giving a rough time to all the future workers of the state, they can?t get around the fact that that?s what they did last week,? said Mulgrew.

The mayor and the governor will donate $36,000 each to the organization.

Bloomberg will donate from his personal fortune, and the governor will donate from his campaign account.

Home Is Where The Mobile Game Is: 96% Play Games In The House, 53% In Bed

Image (1) home-sweet-home.gif for post 211409The magic of mobile games is that they can be played anywhere, but it turns out that quite a lot of us are more than happy to play them when not on the move, according to a new survey from mobile entertainment portal MocoSpace. Taking in responses from some 15,000 U.S. consumers, the company found that 96 percent of them said that they play mobile games at home at least once a day, and among those, 53 percent said they played them in bed -- with more than 52 percent playing for over one hour per day and 32 percent playing for more than three hours per day.

Tebowmania comes to Jets with plenty of drama

(AP) ? Tebowmania's headed to New York, and the drama has already started for Jets fans.

It began the moment the Jets pulled off the deal for the Broncos quarterback. Or thought they did.

Eight hours and one huge snag later, the trade was on again. But not before the Jets added to the franchise's already lengthy list of embarrassing moments.

Sure, Tebowmania is coming to New York, but it certainly wasn't a smooth deal. And it didn't come without some controversy ? something this Jets season could be filled with the moment Mark Sanchez struggles and restless fans call for Tebow to replace him.

"Mark Sanchez is, has been and will be our starting quarterback," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said on conference call late Wednesday night.

But the Jets have opened themselves ? and Sanchez ? to added pressure by bringing in Tebow. New York recently signed Sanchez to a three-year contract extension after falling out of the hunt for Peyton Manning, a vote of confidence for a quarterback whose pride took a serious shot at the end of last season as the Jets finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs. Some players questioned his leadership abilities, but Sanchez recently vowed to be the guy the franchise can lean on.

Turns out, Rex Ryan's Jets now have two of those guys, including one in Tebow who might automatically be the biggest star in New York right now. Not Sanchez. Not Derek Jeter. Not even Jeremy Lin.

"I'm just excited for him and to see what he does," Lin said in Philadelphia, where the Knicks beat the 76ers. "We'll see what happens next year."

Just a few weeks after "Linsanity" swept New York and the rest of the NBA, "Timsanity" now will take over New York after the Jets acquired the polarizing quarterback and a seventh-round draft pick from the Denver Broncos for fourth- and sixth-round picks.

Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath, who led the Jets to their only Super Bowl title in 1969, was among many who were unhappy about the deal.

"I'm just sorry that I can't agree with this situation. I think it's just a publicity stunt. I can't go with it. I think it's wrong," Namath told 1050 ESPN Radio on Wednesday. "I don't think they know what they're doing over there."

The trade was completed hours after the sides initially agreed to a deal, which was hung up when the Jets balked at repaying Denver more than $5 million for a salary advance due Tebow. The two sides agreed to split that cost, and Tannenbaum said the team was "comfortable with the compensation."

He said there was a disagreement about how to handle the salary advance after Denver received the papers.

"We knew what the contract was," he said. "We had read it. ... We felt it was one way; they felt it was another. Based on that, they were well within their rights to assess their different possibilities of what to do and their alternatives. And they did so throughout the day."

So the Jets waited and waited ? and looked as if they had botched the big deal.

Despite ultimately pulling off the trade, it's just another bizarre moment for the Jets, conjuring memories of Bill Belichick's hiring as coach and his resignation one day later.

"I'm thankful they stuck with me through this whole crazy process," Tebow said, repeating several times that he was "excited" to be a member of the Jets.

But the deal also raised questions about the Jets' commitment to Sanchez, who received a $40.5 million contract extension, with $20.5 million guaranteed, earlier this month. During a call late Wednesday night, Tannenbaum repeatedly referred to Sanchez as "our guy" and the team's unquestioned starting quarterback.

"We obviously know that Tim has a magnetic following," Tannenbaum said. "We understand the popularity of the backup quarterback, and this one is more unique than others."

Tebow said he had a "great conversation" on Wednesday with Sanchez, adding that they've been friends for several years. He said he's not here to take Sanchez's job, but to help him as a unique addition to the offense, someone who could run Tony Sparano's wildcat package ? and anything else they ask him to do.

"My goal is to push (Sanchez) to get better, and to push myself to get better every day," Tebow said. "But I think we'll have a great working relationship. We'll have a great relationship off the field, and we've had that the last few years. He's such a classy guy and handles himself so well, and I'll be very honored to call him my teammate."

Defensive end Mike DeVito is excited about the intangible qualities Tebow will offer.

"You've got a tough player on the field, a leader in the locker room and a guy who shares the faith that I share," DeVito said. "So, I'm very grateful to have him on our team, and I feel it's going to really benefit us as a whole."

But, like Namath, not everyone's a fan.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie, took to Twitter on Wednesday to express his confidence in Sanchez and the offense as structured before the deal was finalized.

"Y bring Tebow in when we need to bring in more Weapons for (at)Mark_Sanchez," Cromartie tweeted. "Let's build the team around him. We already signed to 3 year ext."

The Jets signed Drew Stanton last week to be their No. 2 quarterback, ahead of Greg McElroy, the team's seventh-round draft pick last year. Tannenbaum said Tuesday that he was confident in the trio, but on Wednesday acknowledged that the team would assess that situation and that Tebow was Sanchez's clear backup.

Regardless, the Jets sure got the headlines and were the talk of sports radio ? even on a day when the New Orleans Saints received unprecedented punishment from the NFL for a bounty system that rocked the football world. Head coach Sean Payton was suspended without pay for next season, and former defensive coordinator Greg Williams, now with St. Louis, was banned indefinitely.

But even all that couldn't overshadow another embarrassing episode for a franchise that has had to explain away several missteps in recent years.

The Jets are hoping Tebow can help change all that.

He led the Broncos to the playoffs last season ? along the way beating Sanchez and the Jets, who missed the postseason. But Denver executive John Elway believed Manning gave the team a better chance at winning a championship now. For the Jets, Tebow adds a unique dimension to the offense.

"It is very clear: They want me to come in and compete and get better, and get better as a quarterback and to help the team any way possible," Tebow said. "Whatever that role is, I will do my best."

Tebow also provides a solid presence in a locker room that was rife with infighting last season ? particularly between Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes. He also brings with him a flock of fervent fans for reasons that have to do as much with his faith as his football skills. A devout Christian, he's been a role model since his days at Florida, when he led the Gators to two national titles and captured the Heisman Trophy.

Denver started shopping Tebow after signing Manning, and the Jets were considered a long shot as late as Tuesday night. But New York went hard after Tebow.

As part of Tebow's $11.25 million, five-year contract he signed as a rookie in 2010, he had a $6.277 million advance due 29 days after the start of the 2011 league year. That money was paid to him in August after the NFL lockout ended. The trade stalled over the payment the Jets would owe the Broncos from that advance.

That allowed Jacksonville to get back into the hunt, and it came down to the Jaguars and Jets.

"I think we have a duty to consider all avenues of improving the Jaguars on and off the field, especially given the unique circumstances involving the player," Jaguars owner Shahid Khan said in a statement. "I am very satisfied with the outcome."

Tebow said, contrary to some reports, he didn't have final say in where he was going.

"Ultimately, I really didn't have any because the Broncos had all that power," Tebow said, adding that Denver was "gracious" in the way it handled the process. "I was just kind of watching and waiting ? kind of like everybody else.

"It was an interesting day."

Unions fighting Verizon over spectrum purchase ... - Broadband Expert

SpectrumCo LLC is a wireless service provider and is a joint venture of Comcast Corporation, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Sprint Nextel Communications and others.? In 2006 they bought 137 wireless spectrum licenses in an FCC auction.? Verizon wireless is now trying to buy some of those licenses.

Verizon Communications logo1 e1332356003518 Unions fighting Verizon over spectrum purchaseSpectrumCo probably bought the licenses for the cable companies to expand into wireless services and for Sprint?s future 4G LTE network.? It looks like the cable companies decided to stay out of the wireless business, and were selling the licenses.

The FCC has not yet approved the sale.? To make matters worse for Verizon, the unions are trying to stop the sale.

The CWA (Communications Workers of America) and the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) have started a press campaign to garner public and government attention to this.? One of the points is they believe Verizon Communications will stop expanding their FiOS network.

The unions stated in a press release ?If approved by the Federal Communications Commission, the deal would effectively result in an unchecked monopoly by the nation?s largest cable and wireless companies over the telecommunications industry, killing thousands of jobs, ending competition, raising prices for consumers, lowering service quality and discontinuing the development of high-speed internet infrastructure. The proposed deal will end the build-out of Verizon FiOS, the only all-fiber optic commercial network in America, ending cable competition.?

Well, Broadband Expert says this is old news.? Verizon Communications had decided not to expand its FiOS in new markets.? They will, however continue FiOS in markets where they have already penetrated.

For the areas where Verizon is not building out the FiOS, Verizon Wireless will be enhancing the 4G LTE networks to deliver the broadband services.? Surprise!? It looks like there will be some more jobs in the wireless side.

Outrage prompts U.S. investigation of Florida teen killing

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Responding to an international petition, celebrity tweets, and spreading public outrage, the Justice Department opened an investigation on Monday into the shooting of a black teenager by a neighborhood watch captain who escaped arrest.

More than 435,000 people, many alerted by tweets from celebrities like movie director Spike Lee and musician Wyclef Jean, signed a petition on Change.org, a social action website, calling for the arrest of the shooter, George Zimmerman.

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the FBI announced they have opened an investigation into the February 26 shooting in Florida of an unarmed 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin.

"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," the department said.

The campaign to draw attention to the case is the third largest in Change.org's history, and surpassed a petition of about 300,000 signatures credited last year with persuading Bank of America to drop plans for a $5 debit card fee, said Megan Lubin, a Change.org spokeswoman.

The victim's family lawyer, Ben Crump, said public pressure was behind an earlier promise by the Justice Department to review the case. And some Florida legislators are moving to consider a change in the law to prevent a recurrence.

"People all over the world, more than 400,000 people, said we demand you make an arrest. That's what is building pressure to look at it," Crump said.

The Justice Department said its investigation would examine the facts and circumstances of the shooting, and noted that with all federal civil rights crimes, the government must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person acted intentionally.

"Negligence, recklessness, mistakes and accidents are not prosecutable under the federal criminal civil rights laws," the Justice Department said.

The shooting in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, when Zimmerman spotted Martin walking home from buying candy and iced tea at a convenience store.

Zimmerman, patrolling the neighborhood in his car, called the 911 emergency number and reported what he called "a real suspicious guy."

"This guy looks like he's up to no good, or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about," Zimmerman told dispatchers. "These assholes. They always get away."

The dispatcher, hearing heavy breathing on the phone, asked Zimmerman: "Are you following him?"

"Yeah," Zimmerman said.

"Okay, we don't need you to do that," the dispatcher responded.

But several neighbors subsequently called 911 to report a scuffle between Zimmerman and Martin. While some of the callers were still on the phone, cries for help followed by a gunshot can be heard in the background.

"I recognized that (voice) as my baby screaming for help before his life was taken," Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, told Reuters.

"STAND YOUR GROUND"

Police declined to arrest Zimmerman, and turned the case over to prosecutors, where it remains under review. Police cited Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, enacted in 2005 and now in effect in at least 16 other states.

Dubbed "Shoot first (ask questions later)" by opponents, the Florida law allows a potential crime victim who is "in fear of great bodily injury" to use deadly force in public places.

The landmark law expanded on legislation, known as the Castle Doctrine, that allowed use of deadly force in defense of "hearth and home." Passed under former Florida Governor Jeb Bush in 2005, it overturned a centuries-old doctrine that required the potential victim to retreat and avoid confrontation if possible, according to Ladd Everitt, spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a Washington-based advocacy group.

"No one could argue that Zimmerman could not have safely retreated and avoided this conflict, and I think that is the critical element here and why these laws are so dangerous," Everitt said. "He (Zimmerman) does not have a duty to retreat in Florida."

Crump said Zimmerman should not be protected under the Stand Your Ground law. "It's illogical, you can claim self-defense after you chase and pursue somebody," he said. "That's a courtroom defense. That's not something the police accept on the side of the street."

Five years after Florida's Stand Your Ground law was enacted, a 2010 review by the St. Petersburg Times found that reports of justifiable homicides had tripled, and a majority of cases were excused by prosecutors or the courts. Meanwhile, the petition drive, started by a friend of Trayvon's mother, has been signed by people across the globe from Canada to Thailand, Lubin said.

Celebrity tweets over the weekend made #Trayvon a trending topic on Twitter, she said. Additional celebrities tweeting and posting on Facebook about the case include singers Clay Aiken and John Legend, filmmaker Michael Moore and actress Mia Farrow.

"This is a great moment for the entire nation to become educated in these Stand Your Ground laws," Everitt said. "It's unbelievably dangerous and really takes us to a situation where the rule of law is beginning to erode on our streets and vigilantism is being actively encouraged by these laws."

The next thing that you should do is take a look at the list of ingredients. You want to make sure that you are not known to be allergic to any of these. Furthermore, you need to make sure that none of them are contraindicated by any of the medications that you are on. BASRA, Iraq (AP) ? Followers of the anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Monday demanded better living conditions in Iraq on the ninth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of their country.

Iraqis have struggled with high unemployment, corruption and an infrastructure degraded by years of sanctions, war and economic neglect. As the violence across the country has abated, economic development has become a key concern for many Iraqis.

Sheik Assad al-Nasiri said that Sadrists want the government to step up with better-paying jobs, public services and to fight corruption now that the U.S. troops have left Iraq.

Al-Nasiri credited the Sadrists with liberating Iraq from the troops he described as occupiers.

"We fought for Iraq and liberated it from the American occupation," al-Nasiri told thousands of al-Sadr's followers who turned out for a rally in the southern province of Basra, located about 340 miles (550 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad.

"The government must meet our demands to live a better life," al-Nasiri added.

The Sadrists are partners in the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. But al-Sadr and the prime minister have a tenuous relationship ever since Iraqi government forces routed al-Sadr's militia forces in Basra and eastern Baghdad in 2008. Al-Sadr later backed al-Maliki for a second term but the relationship has been marked by mutual suspicion.

Among the protesters was Hassan Saleh, 27. He graduated in 2007 from the state-run Technology Institute but can't find a job.

"I work as a construction worker because I can't find a government job," Saleh said. "We have suffered a lot in this rich country."

Many Iraqis look to the government, already one of the country's biggest employers, as a source of jobs.

Coalition forces led by the U.S. invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003. The U.S. pulled its troops from the country last December.

Meanwhile, Iraqi authorities released the Saddam Hussein-era trade minister who was found innocent of charges against him after nine years in prison.

Former trade minister, Mohammed Mahdi Saleh was arrested by the U.S. forces in 2003. Deputy Justice Minister Busho Ibrahim said Monday that Saleh was released the day before.

Judge Raid Juhi of the special Iraqi court that tried Saddam's henchmen said Saleh was accused of squandering public money and having a role in the 1992 execution of 42 merchants found guilty of profiteering.

Juhi said he was found innocent last year but authorities waited for any other complaints before releasing him.

Saddam was executed in December 2006.
