Wiz Khalifa Wants To 'Motivate' Pittsburgh's Hip-Hop Up-And-Comers

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's hip-hop roots run deep. Wu-Tang Clan's RZA once called the Steel City home, and mid-1990s Death Row Records MC/producer Sam Sneed held the city down as did Dr. Dre's production affiliate Mel-Man. Still, when Wiz Khalifa put the 'Burgh on his back with his 2010 hometown ode "Black & Yellow," the city had officially arrived as a hip-hop hot spot.

"Everybody's hardworking and it's not like a big music scene out there, so when you got somethin', you just go with it," emerging Pittsburgh MC Chevy Woods said in a December interview. "Everybody sees the light that shines on [Khalifa] and Mac [Miller] and now it's trickling down to everybody else."

After Wiz blew the doors off, Mac Miller came next. Though both rappers are signed to Rostrum Records, a local label, they came up separately. Khalifa has his Taylor Gang crew, while Miller has the Most Dope collective.

"With the music, it's a whole new avenue we done opened up for kids and for people to look up to," Khalifa said of how he helped shine a spotlight on the 'Burgh, paving the way for future MCs. "It's a reality now out there, so it's really important for us to just embrace 'em and motivate 'em and push 'em forward."

As a kid, Wiz moved around a bit but began to call the 'Burgh home at an early age — particularly the rough-and-tumble Hazelwood section. "You really won't get it if you're not from there," Wiz said of his hometown. "Just growing up in Pittsburgh and knowing different neighborhoods, having family there and just loving it, it's like no other place."

As far as Pennsylvania goes, Philadelphia has churned out the most rap talent. From Schoolly D to Will Smith to Beanie Sigel's State Property and now Maybach Music's Meek Mill, Philly has had no shortage of rap representation. While they sit within the same state lines, Pittsburgh and Illadelph couldn't be more different.

"We always had love for Philly. It was harder for Philly to embrace us because we're a little bit slower to them or to more East Coast towns," Wiz said. "Philly is more East Coast than Pittsburgh. It's closer to New Jersey and New York, so the vibe is way more fast-paced. Pittsburgh, it's just laid-back ... Midwest almost on some country stuff."

Stick with MTV News all week as Mac Miller takes us back to the 'Burgh and spotlights the city's vibrant hip-hop scene. Then tune in to "RapFix Live" on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MTV.com for exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from Mac's hometown shows.

Nicole Scherzinger, Steve Jones Leaving 'X Factor'

Former Pussycat Doll reportedly wants to focus on her music career.

"The X Factor" has said goodbye to two of its familiar faces: mentor Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones.

E! News reported that the former Pussycat Doll and "Dancing With the Stars" champ has decided not to return to the show in order to focus on her music career. "She's spoken to Simon [Cowell], and he's given her his blessing," a source told E! Scherzinger often became emotional during elimination episodes, shedding tears and expressing sympathy for ousted contestants.

As for inaugural "X Factor" host Jones, the cheeky Welshman broke the news himself via Twitter on Monday. "I won't be hosting next seasons X Factor which is a shame but I cant complain as I've had a great time," Jones tweeted to his more than 94,000 followers. "Good luck to everyone on the show."

Jones had decidedly big shoes to fill stepping into the gig, with comparisons instantly made to "American Idol" host/ media mogul Ryan Seacrest. Throughout the season, the reviews of Jones' hosting skills were decidedly mixed.

Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly's comments during the TCA panels earlier this month now seem as though a decision was made awhile ago. "I think everyone has come to realize the value of a Ryan Seacrest," he told reporters during the network's press tour panel. "If you dialed the clock back 11 years, I'm not sure everybody in this room would have given him all the credit at that time. Those are very hard jobs to do. So whether Steve's the guy or not, it comes under the heading of 'growth' in general. There will be some tweaks to the show, but I'll tell you, I'm very happy to have it, and it's gonna be part of us for a long time."

The 34-year-old Jones seemed to take the criticism in stride and didn't appear to have high hopes for a return for the second season. "There's been no contract conversations and there won't be until the New Year," Jones told Metro UK in December. "If I'm back, great. If not, I'll do something else. Simple as that."

One thing Jones does have hope for is a possible romantic connection with Scherzinger, who was originally supposed to be his co-host before she replaced Cheryl Cole on the judging panel.

"If I ever leave 'X Factor,' Scherzinger's phone will be smoking hot from me ringing it constantly," Jones joked to Metro. "If we are not colleagues, then she's fair game."

Will you miss Steve Jones on "The X Factor"? Let us know in the comments below!

"The Help" gets Oscar boost with big SAG wins (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Civil rights drama "The Help" got a leg up in the Oscar race on Sunday when the movie won three awards from the Screen Actors Guild, including best cast in a surprise over silent movie romance "The Artist."

"The Help," which came into the show with four nominations, more than any other film, also earned its star Viola Davis the SAG award for best actress, while Octavia Spencer was named top supporting actress. They both played maids who face discrimination in the film set in Mississippi during the 1960s.

Davis thanked another African-American actress, Cicely Tyson, who inspired her as a child and was in the audience. Davis talked of dreaming big as a child when she wanted to become an actress. She encouraged others to do so, too.

"Dream big and dream fierce," she said.

Davis also took the opportunity to remind the celebrities in attendance, including A-listers George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Meryl Streep, as well as TV audiences, that change is still necessary in current U.S. culture.

"The stain of racism and sexism is not just for people of color or women," she said. "It's all of our burden. All of us, and we can, absolutely all of us, we can inspire change."

Silent movie "The Artist" could only claim one trophy. Jean Dujardin was named best actor in a drama for his role as a fading screen star at the end of the talkies who is ultimately saved by love.

Dujardin, who beat out Clooney and Pitt in the category, seemed genuinely surprised as he held his statue and thanked SAG. Like Davis, he noted that as a kid he was always a dreamer and said his teachers called him "Jean of the moon."

"I was always dreaming," he said. "I realize now that I never stopped dreaming. Thank you very much."

Others winning SAG film honors included Christopher Plummer for supporting actor. Plummer, 82, who plays an elderly man who reveals his homosexuality, much to the chagrin of his family, thanked his fellow actors from the stage, calling them a wacky but wonderful bunch of artists.

SAG's film awards are closely watched for their impact on Oscars because actors make up the biggest voting group at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which picks winners. The Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles on February 26.

Coming into the SAG Awards, "The Artist" had been favored by pundits because it has claimed a string of victories in recent weeks at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice honors, as well as among industry groups like the producers and directors guilds.

But pundits may now have to re-calculate their odds back toward "The Help" with its SAG wins. Another key Oscar contender, "The Descendants," was shut out by SAG voters.

TV WINNERS

Unlike academy voters focused on film, SAG members also pick winners in TV awards, and in that arena, "Boardwalk Empire" was named best drama series for the second straight year and "Modern Family was chosen top comedy, also for the second year running.

Jessica Lange took her first SAG trophy for best dramatic actress in new show, "American Horror Story," and Steve Buscemi was named best actor in a drama for critically acclaimed "Boardwalk Empire." Both thanked their cast and crew members.

Alec Baldwin, Betty White and the "Modern Family" were the three TV winners in comedy categories.

The offbeat "Modern Family" claimed its second straight win for best TV comedy, while Baldwin was named best actor in a TV comedy for the sixth year playing a TV executive on "30 Rock," and White, who turned 90 earlier this month, took the comedy actress trophy for a second time in "Hot in Cleveland."

An obviously surprised White acknowledged her co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick.

The win "belongs with four of us," she said, then looked at her statuette with a gleam in her eye and a joke on her mind. "I'm dealing them right-in with this. I'm not going to let them keep this, but I will let them see it."

In other TV awards, Kate Winslet was named best actress in a small-screen movie or miniseries for "Mildred Pierce," and Paul Giamatti won the trophy for actor in a movie or mini-series with "Too Big to Fail."

Among the humorous moments, three women from raunchy film comedy "Bridesmaids" played a game in which everyone had to take a drink when director Martin Scorsese's name was mentioned. The game became a running joke throughout the show.

And of the more poignant points, Mary Tyler Moore - a star on comedy "The Dick Van Dyke" show in the 1960s, who cemented her fame in the '70s on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and starred in critically acclaimed 1980 movie "Ordinary People" - was given a lifetime achievement honor.

"It means so much, it really does," she told Reuters about her honor backstage.

Asked how she wanted to be remembered for all her accomplishments, she replied in modest fashion. "As a good chum. As somebody who was happy most of the time and took great pride in making people laugh when I was able to pull that off."

Hollywood's biggest film stars including Clooney, Pitt, Jolie and others turned out on the red carpet, as did TV's top talent such as Julianna Margulies, Lea Michelle and others.

As with previous Hollywood honors programs, many of the women showed off low-cut or strapless gowns. Some wore vintage or sequined dresses. Colors - violets, reds and teals - proved popular. The men wore tuxedos or stylish suits with bow ties.

Sudan frees South Sudan's oil tankers; dispute continues (Reuters)

JUBA/DUBAI (Reuters) ? Sudan released tankers loaded with South Sudanese oil that had been held at Port Sudan in a row over export transit fees, days after Khartoum seized crude from its new neighbor and offered it at a steeply discounted price.

Sudan's Oil Minister Awad al-Jaz said the release came as part of efforts to reach an agreement with South Sudan on the transit fees, but so far "we don't have any positive response from the other side."

South Sudan has shut down oil output in protest at the seizing of the cargoes, and talks between the two to reach a settlement broke down over the weekend.

The former civil war foes have failed to agree the value of the fee landlocked South Sudan should pay to pump oil north by pipeline for export from Port Sudan.

"The four ships that were being detained were released yesterday at 5:00 p.m.," South Sudan's Minister of Petroleum and Mining Stephen Dhieu Dau said by telephone.

"They were carrying oil for Vitol and Sinopec."

He added that 3.5 million barrels have been released but Sudan should now allow 5.4 million barrels to be lifted, indicating that the dispute was far from resolved.

"The ships are waiting," said Dae. "If they want to negotiate in good faith with us they should allow us to come and lift it."

The ships that have been released were already loaded and Sudan had held them from sailing. Separately, Sudan has sold off at least one tanker of crude seized from the South and has offered two other cargoes.

In addition to the three, at least seven tankers are still waiting at the port to lift December and January cargoes, raking up demurrage costs of $20,000-$22,000 per day, traders and shipbrokers said.

Two of the tankers that were freed were chartered by oil trading giant Vitol, an industry source told Reuters.

"The two tankers were freed on Sunday and they are carrying a total of 1.6 million barrels," said the industry source, declining to be identified because he is not authorized to talk to the media.

Oil is the lifeline of both countries' economies. The South controlled about 350,000 bpd of oil output when it became independent in July under a 2005 peace agreement that ended decades of civil war.

Oil provides about 98 percent of South Sudan's income and is vital for developing an already poor country devastated by years of civil war.

China is the biggest buyer of oil from the two countries and the biggest investor in South Sudan's oilfields.

Worn-out machines as leading indicator (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Delivery trucks wear out, computers break down, software becomes outdated -- and finally businesses have to start investing in new equipment. Companies that want to remain competitive have to start spending again as an economy slowly recovers.

Four years after the downturn began, the replacement cycle shows signs of kicking into a higher gear in the United States even among small businesses, and it could give an unexpected boost to growth and employment this year.

That assumes no further shocks to the world economy caused by the euro zone debt crisis.

Greece and its bankers have yet to agree on chopping the country's debt load to 120 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, something the International Monetary Fund is demanding in return for the bailout money Greece needs to avoid a default in March.

But capital spending alone is insufficient to drive a U.S. recovery that will be strong enough to quickly lift employment as consumer demand is still limited by heavy debt loads.

In the United States, large corporations have already dug into huge cash piles to upgrade plant and equipment, adding incrementally to an economy that grew by 2.8 percent in the fourth quarter.

Now small businesses, which drive about half of U.S. economic growth and a big chunk of job creation, are increasing their spending on equipment, too, an important precursor to stronger hiring.

But the U.S. jobs report for January, due on Friday, is unlikely to show marked improvement in the labor market after strong gains in December.

Economists surveyed by Reuters forecast 150,000 new jobs in January against 200,000 the prior month. Some investment banks also warn the 8.5 percent unemployment rate could tick up as signs of a gradual firming of the economy encourages more people to return to the labor force.

Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, said small businesses could start hiring more aggressively as the year progresses.

In the last economic cycle, they contributed about two-thirds of the jobs growth, and when they hang out the "help wanted" signs, they can be a powerful source of employment.

"Dollar for dollar in GDP terms, they generate two jobs for every one generated by a large corporation," Shepherdson said.

For the early signs of this small business revival, Shepherdson points to two factors: access to credit has improved markedly as shown by a surge in banks' commercial and industrial lending, and an index of capital expenditure intentions, as measured by the National Federation of Independent Business, is climbing.

The NFIB in December reported that capital outlays had increased for three straight months, the first solid improvement in three years. Owners planning capital investments in the next three to six months also rose to a 40-month high.

NFIB policy analyst Holly Wade said anecdotally she hears of more businesspeople talking of increasing their budgets.

"They have stretched out their machinery and equipment and would have normally invested in replacement, but they were waiting as long as possible. Now they are starting to see better sales and earnings, and they are more comfortable investing some of those dollars in capex," she said.

"In the next three to six months, it wouldn't be surprising to see the same rate of growth in capital outlays we have seen recently," she said.

A similar pattern is evident in the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank's Business Outlook Survey. In January the index for capital expenditure plans for the next six months more than doubled to a reading of 22.9 from 10.8. And the U.S. Commerce Department's durable goods report for December showed capital goods orders outside of defense and aircraft rose by 2.9 percent.

Industrial conglomerate Honeywell International IncN> is one of the big companies expanding, although overall corporations give a mixed outlook for their plans.

"We're looking to spend $100 to $150 million more in capital on a year over year basis. Some that is going into facility upgrades, some of that is going into technology centers," Honeywell's chief financial officer, Dave Anderson, said with the release of the company's earnings last week.

"Don't look for it to be a driving force for recovery, but capital spending will continue to be a supportive factor," said Ellen Zentner, economist at Nomura Securities.

U.S. car and truck sales, due on Wednesday, are getting a boost from businesses replacing worn out models. They are seen holding at the 13.5 million annual rate in January.

The Institute of Supply Management, an industry group, will also release its U.S. manufacturing index on Wednesday; it is seen rising to 54.5 in January from 53.9.

Senegalese pop star Ndour tussles with police (AP)

DAKAR, Senegal ? An Associated Press reporter saw police tussle with international pop star Youssou Ndour, who was pushed back by police when he tried to enter a police station where a leading opposition figure is being detained.

Ndour had come on Saturday to the Criminal Investigation Division as part of a large crowd of opposition supporters who wanted to show their solidarity with Alioune Tine, a well-known human rights activist who is being questioned by police.

Tine was the organizer of a demonstration Friday that turned violent following the decision of Senegal's constitutional court to allow the country's leader to run for a third term. The legal body approved President Abdoulaye Wade's third term bid, even though critics say the constitution allows a maximum of two.

Multiple births lead to weight gain, other problems for mouse moms and offspring

ScienceDaily (Jan. 26, 2012) ? Women have long bemoaned the fact that as they have more children, their weight gain from pregnancy becomes more difficult to lose. A new study using a mouse model that mimics the human effects of multiparity (giving birth more than once) has found that mouse moms who gave birth four times accrued significantly more fat compared to primiparous females (those giving birth once) of similar age. The study also found significantly more inflammation in the livers of multiparous animals. Multiparity's effect also extended to the male offspring, who showed significant weight gain during adulthood.

Their primiparous counterparts did not, despite similar levels of food consumption. The findings are contained in a study entitled "Multiparity Leads to Obesity and Inflammation in Mothers and Obesity in Male Offspring," and appear in the American Journal of Physiology -- Endocrinology and Metabolism, published by the American Physiological Society.

Methodology

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati designed the study in two parts. In the first part, they established the mouse model that mimics multiparity-induced obesity in humans. In the second part, they examined male offspring of the multiparous females.

The researchers compared one group of mice that gave birth four times with a second group of mice that gave birth only once, some of these at the same age that the first group had its fourth litter and some at a younger age.

The researchers weighed these animals and assessed the size of their fat deposits. They also performed glucose tolerance tests in all the mice and measured biochemical markers of inflammation. Additionally, the researchers performed similar tests in the male offspring of primiparous and multiparous mice, and measured weight, fat deposits, and glucose tolerance. They also measured the expression levels of various genes involved in storing versus using fat.

Results

The first part of the study showed that giving birth multiple times was a significant contributor to obesity regardless of age, with mice who gave birth multiple times being up to 45 percent heavier than those who had a single litter at the same age that the first animals had their fourth. The multiparous animals had fat deposits several times larger than those in typically-mated primiparous mice, as well as significantly larger glucose spikes after meals, a warning sign for diabetes. Multiparous moms also showed elevated markers for inflammation in numerous body tissues, a condition linked to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and a variety of other diseases, as compared to the primiparous mice as well as age-matched females fed a high fat diet.

The second part of the study revealed that male offspring of multiparous mice weighed as much as 40 percent more than the male offspring of primiparous mice, despite eating no more food. Interestingly, the differences became apparent when the offspring were older, suggesting that excess energy was stored as fat only after growth rate slowed down. When the researchers examined genes responsible for storing versus using fat, the offspring of multiparous animals appeared to use less fat compared to those of the primiparous animals.

Importance, Implications of the Findings

These findings confirm that in mice, as in humans, giving birth multiple times, regardless of age, can lead to significant weight gain, and inflammation. The results also support the theory that multiple pregnancies induce metabolic stresses on females that have heritable consequences and may be part of an obesity cycle between mothers and offspring.

The authors suggest that finding effective ways to help women lose weight between pregnancies will assist in maintaining their health and that of their children, though additional interventions will likely be required as multiple pregnancies appear to have an adverse effect on women that is independent of her fat mass. "The current studies are important in supporting a healthier, less obese population in that we have defined specific metabolic pathways that are likely involved in the programming of obesity and can be targeted in either the mother or her offspring," the authors say.

The study was conducted by Sandra R. Rebholz, Thomas Jones, Katie T. Burke, Anja Jaeschke, Patrick Tso, David A. D'Alessio, and Laura A. Woollett, all of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Connecting.the.Dots: Cancer Cures for the Body Politic

After months of trying to ameliorate a disease ravaging the GOP, Jon Huntsman Jr. has moved into fighting cancers that afflict human beings rather than the body politic by taking over as chairman of a foundation that funds his family?s Institute, a research, education and treatment center with a full-time faculty and staff of 1300.

In his political hiatus, Huntsman worked hard but failed to offer Republicans the radical surgery that might have saved it from the coma in which it now seems to be sunk. Let?s hope he encourages scientists to be more aggressive in the labs.

In the Weekly Address today, the President reminds us again of how far the Tea Party virus has progressed by citing the case of Sen. Mike Lee, who unseated long-time conservative Robert Bennett last year:

?Just two days ago, a senator from Utah promised to obstruct every single American I appoint to a judgeship or public service position-- unless I fire the consumer watchdog I put in place to protect the American people from financial schemes or malpractice.

?For the most part, it?s not that this senator thinks these nominees are unqualified. In fact, all of the judicial nominees being blocked have bipartisan support. And almost 90 percent have unanimous support from the Judiciary Committee.

?Instead, one of his aides told reporters that the senator plans to, and I?m quoting here, ?Delay and slow the process in order to get the President?s attention.?

?One senator gumming up the works for the whole country is certainly not what our founding fathers envisioned.?

This particular pustule will be on the Senate?s backside for five more years but, in November, voters can start surgically removing some of the others.

Good luck to Huntsman in his quest for cancer cures. We are going to have find our own.

Cuba: Tough prison terms for mahogany tree thefts

(AP) ? Cuba convicted six people of cutting down African mahogany trees in the National Botanical Gardens and sentenced them to eight and 10 years in prison, the Communist Party newspaper Granma said Friday.

The men felled nine trees on two occasions in December and harvested a total of $122 worth of wood, according to the court sentencing printed alongside the article. Mahogany sells for considerably more than that elsewhere, listing for $10 to $15 per board-foot on some U.S. websites.

Angela Leiva, director of the reserve, told Granma that the 30- to 40-year-old trees were important to the ecology of the gardens and their loss cannot be repaired in the short or medium term.

Inaugurated by Fidel Castro in 1989 and located just south of the capital, the 1,500-acre (600-hectare) Botanical Gardens fell on hard times after Cuba's 1990s economic crisis precipitated by the collapse of the Soviet Union, the island's largest trade partner and benefactor.

The reserve's facilities fell into disrepair, vigilance became lax and the entire 7-mile (11.5-kilometer) perimeter fence was scavenged amid "social indiscipline," Granma said.

The government has been waging a campaign against lawbreaking and "social indiscipline," with official newspapers such as Granma carrying reminders of stiff penalties for everything from the unauthorized slaughter of cattle to illegally building home expansions onto sidewalks.

Authorities began to notice trees sporadically disappearing from the reserve in 2008, according to Granma's full-page article. The thefts increased over the next two years and reserve officials complained to authorities.

"Regrettably, misunderstanding prevailed in the face of these claims and no preventative measure or action was taken to avoid a repeat of such events," the story said.

The tough sentences announced Friday send a stern warning that illegal cutting in the reserve will no longer go unpunished.

The court said it took into account aggravating factors, such as conspiracy by three or more people and the commission of a crime at night or in an unpopulated area, in condemning two men to a decade behind bars and the rest to eight years.

It said the six acted with others who have not been identified to transport, process and sell the lumber.

Granma said a new fence made of wood and bars is being constructed around the Botanical Gardens, and authorities are adding vehicles and communications equipment to bolster the night guard. A plan to erect five observation towers has also been approved.

Cuba has scarce supplies of wood for uses from carpentry to home construction, and illegal scavenging for materials to sell on the black market is common.

The economy has recovered somewhat since the 1990s but is still struggling. Authorities regularly blame shortages on the United States' nearly 50-year-old trade and travel embargo against the island.

Western Digital MyBook Thunderbolt Duo eyes-on at Macworld 2012 (video)

Here at Macworld 2012, Western Digital demoed a preview of their essentially finished, yet not final, MyBook Thunderbolt Duo. Scheduled to ship in Q1 for an "aggressive price," the unit plays host to two 3.5-inch drives, which'll come stuffed from the factory in either 4TB (2x 2TB) or 6TB (2x 3TB) configurations. On the outside, you're looking at the MyBook aesthetic you either love or loathe, but around back you'll find all connectivity has been gutted, save for power and two Thunderbolt ports. The latter means that up to six can be daisy-chained off one interconnect, which when setup in RAID 0 equates to rather speedy transfers, like 700MB/sec reads and 500MB/sec writes in the four-unit demonstration configuration we toyed with. And it's future proof too, as there's a door up-top which enables plebes to swap drives should the need arise. We'll keep an ear out for pricing, but until that day arrives, peep them in the gallery below, or in video form after the break.

Megaupload founder faces lengthy extradition battle (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Efforts by the United States to extradite the mastermind of an alleged Internet piracy scheme from New Zealand to face copyright infringement and money laundering charges are likely to be long and complex.

Kim Dotcom, a German national also known as Kim Schmitz, will be held in custody in New Zealand until February 22 ahead of a hearing of a U.S. extradition application.

U.S. authorities claim Dotcom's file-sharing site, Megaupload.com, has netted $175 million since 2005 by copying and distributing music, movies and other copyrighted content without authorization. Dotcom's lawyers say the company simply offered online storage and that he will fight extradition.

"It could take some considerable time to get through the whole thing," said senior New Zealand lawyer Grant Illingworth, adding there were rights of appeal and procedural review to both sides.

Dotcom, 38, and three others, were arrested on Friday after a police raid at his rented country estate, reputedly New Zealand's most expensive home, at the request of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Under New Zealand's extradition law the prosecution must show there is enough evidence that would substantiate charges against Dotcom and the other accused of breaching local copyright laws.

"What the judge has to do is decide whether there is a prima facie case that would justify the person being put on trial if the offence had occurred in New Zealand," Illingworth said.

"If the evidence doesn't make out, what under New Zealand law amounts to a prima facie case, then the person walks away."

A 1970 extradition treaty between the United States and New Zealand gives the U.S. 45 days from the time of Dotcom's arrest to request extradition. The New Zealand Extradition Act, passed in 1999, gives the United States preferential status to access a streamlined process for making its request.

The judge who refused Dotcom bail said he could not assess whether the United States had a strong enough case against Dotcom, nor whether he had a good defense.

"All I can say is that there appears to be an arguable defense, at least in respect of the breach of copyright charges," Judge David McNaughton wrote in his judgment.

CIVIL MATTER

Copyright infringement and illegal file sharing are normally civil matters in New Zealand, but there is a provision for criminal charges and a maximum 5-year jail term for serious breaches.

Rick Shea, a partner at Lowndes Jordan in Auckland, said there were some differences between New Zealand and U.S. copyright law, in terms of knowledge, that could be an issue.

Douglas McNabb, a U.S. lawyer who specializes in extradition defense, said extraditions to the United States have to meet probable cause - the same standard that is required for making arrests in the United States.

Although the extradition hearing is not a test of guilt or innocence, McNabb said Dotcom's lawyers may argue they should be allowed a limited discovery process to show that probable cause has not been met.

Prime Minister John Key said the issues raised were serious and New Zealand would co-operate with the U.S. authorities.

"This is the largest, most significant case in Internet piracy so New Zealand is certainly going to work with the United States authorities to allow them to extradite Kim Dotcom," he said on TV3.

According to Shea, New Zealand has never had an extradition proceeding involving copyright law. "I wouldn't expect this to be sorted out quickly," he said.

AGGRESSIVE CHARGES

Anthony Falzone, Director for Copyright and Fair Use at Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society, said it was too early to comment on the strength of the case, but questioned whether some of the allegations in the indictment would actually push Megaupload outside the safe harbor provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The indictment "pushes some pretty aggressive theories", Falzone said.

The most recent Supreme Court case to deal with similar issues was in 2005. In MGM v Grokster, the U.S. court highlighted the importance of intent in determining if an Internet firm was liable for its users infringing copyright.

"A lot of the Megaupload case may also rise and fall on the question of intent," said Falzone.

With MGM, the court found the intent of the Internet company from the beginning was to build a tool to facilitate illegal sharing.

"Maybe that's what the Feds (FBI) think they have here, too," said Falzone.

Was 'Bridesmaids' deserving of Oscar nod?

AP

Debate continues over whether "Bridesmaids" deserves its Oscar nominations.

By Christopher Bahn

Did "Bridesmaids" get left behind at Oscar's Best Picture altar? Or are the raunchy comedy's two nominations already more than it deserves?

Some early buzz suggested that Kristen Wiig's R-rated wedding-disaster hit was a contender for the Academy Awards' top prize, especially now that the field is open to more than just five films. That didn't happen, but "Bridesmaids" did score a supporting-actress nod for Melissa McCarthy, who played the endearingly obnoxious and sexually voracious Megan, and an original screenplay nomination for writers Wiig and Annie Mumolo.?

Best Picture was always going to be a long shot. The fact is that the Oscars have never been kind to comedies, as a look at recent years makes clear. Of the nine movies nominated for Best Picture this year, only Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris" is considered a comedy, and of the 10 nominations in 2010 and 2011, only the animated movies ?"Toy Story 3" and "Up" qualify.?

Another thing to note is that all three of those films lean more toward the heartwarming than the edgy side, and the Oscars don't tend to favor that kind of tone unless it's in a serious, weighty drama. The bold use of gross-out humor in "Bridesmaids" surely didn't work in its favor for the big nomination. Instead, it was honored in traditionally safe, relatively minor categories for envelope-pushers ? supporting actress and script.

?

But in any case, along with successful showings for "Moneyball" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," the nominations for "Bridesmaids" are a victory for mainstream, populist entertainment in a race that usually leans too heavily toward the self-consciously serious.?

Some fans were thrilled for Melissa McCarthy.

McCarthy in particular makes an unusual Oscar choice ? her character is neither the long-suffering martyr or dainty model that usually gets picked. Megan is brassy, bawdy, and confidently sexual ? a testament to McCarthy's fearless improv-comedy skills. But she's much more likely, in the end, to be a crowd-pleasing favorite who's mobbed on the red carpet, but?who doesn't walk down the aisle at the Kodak Theater.?

Still, her nomination is winning acclaim among mainstream filmgoers ? based on a totally unscientific scan of Twitter, popular sentiment is solidly, maybe 80/20, in her favor. One commenter compared McCarthy's performance to Nicole Kidman's in "The Hours," pointing out what the Oscars often miss: "Great comedy is harder than sticking on a prosthetic nose & looking morose." Another took the opposite view, encapsulating the unease many feel about "Bridesmaids" and its raunchy, body-fluid-heavy humor being honored among the best achievements in cinema: "Dear God: Please don't let Melissa McCarthy win an Oscar for pooping in a sink."

Is "Bridesmaids" Oscar material? Does Melissa McCarthy have a chance in the supporting actress category? Tell us on Facebook.

Were two Oscar nominations right for 'Bridesmaids'?

Steps You Should Take to Get Insurance ? Centired.com - For All ...

As young people grow up and start their own lives, they need to buy new things. Buying things can lead to having to buy insurance. If you buy a car, you will need to also buy auto insurance. If you buy a house, you will need to buy insurance. If you get married or have children, you will want to consider life insurance. There are all kinds of different insurance that we must all deal with in our lives. Finding a good deal on insurance from good insurance companies can be a challenge. It can get confusing, too, with all the different insurance coverage types and insurance companies and insurance policies. A lot of people are upset at how high the cost of insurance policies are. All insurance, though, can turn out to be an incredible and invaluable investment when accidents and losses happen. Insurance is something very important to invest in. Although insurance can be an expensive business, there are several things you can do to get the best deal on insurance and ensure you get the coverage you want in addition.

What insurance will do is protect you financially when accidents and losses occur. Having insurance is like a guarantee that you will receive some kind of financial compensation to help you through your problem. For example, if you get into a car accident, it is no secret that car repairs are extremely costly. If your car is insured, though, your car insurance company will pay for you to get your car fixed. If you buy a house and it floods, home insurance with flood coverage will pay for the damages caused by the flood.

When you are considering buying a car, you should know that it is a law to have car insurance. There are dozens and dozens of insurance companies out there that offer car insurance with all different types of coverage on your car. What you can do to find the best deal on auto insurance is to call around to various insurance companies that offer car insurance and ask for an insurance quote. An insurance quote is kind of like an estimate on the cost of what you will be spending on the insurance for a certain coverage. All you must do is supply that insurance company with some basic information about yourself and they can give you a price estimate, or an insurance quote, on your car and the coverage you want. Once you have gathered a few quotes from different companies, as long as they all support the services that you need, you will have the lowest costing insurance available right in front of you.

When you have chosen to go with a certain insurance company, you should ask about their insurance bundles. A lot of insurance companies will offer to give you car insurance, home insurance, and life insurance all through them. And since you are purchasing all of this insurance through one company, they will give you a discount. This is much better and more organized than purchasing insurance from three different insurance company.

Any insurance, whether it be car insurance, life insurance, liability insurance, or health insurance, will cost you per month. Every month you will pay an amount that guarantees you will be protected financially if you were to be in an accident or experienced losses. Steps You Should Take to Get Insurance

Obama: US must reclaim values of fairness for all (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Keeping the American dream alive has become "the defining issue of our time," President Barack Obama says. He's using Tuesday night's State of the Union address to draw a stark election-year line with Republicans over how to keep the United States from eroding further into a nation of haves and have-nots.

In excerpts of his speech released in advance, Obama attacked income equality and offered his own economic revival plan built upon boosting manufacturing, energy and education. He warned Republicans in Congress that he will fight them if they try to obstruct him or restore an economy gutted by "outsourcing, bad debt and phony financial profits."

Driving everything about the speech: Jobs, including Obama's own. He was essentially making his case for re-election as he spelled out where he wants to take the country.

Obama was making his pitch to a bitterly divided Congress and to a country underwhelmed by his handling of the economy. Targeting anxiety about a slumping middle class, Obama was calling for the rich to pay more in taxes. Every proposal was to be underlined by the idea that hard work and responsibility still count.

"No debate is more important," Obama said in the excerpts released by the White House ahead of the 9 p.m. EST speech.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well while a growing number barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same set of rules," the president said.

Stumping for Romney, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says character counts (Daily Caller)

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell endorsed Mitt Romney?s campaign for president on Friday and told a rally of supporters that both character and values matter when selecting a nominee to run against President Obama.

McDonnell didn?t mention Romney?s rival, Newt Gingrich, by name in his remarks. But the Virginia governor?s comments come just hours after questions about Gingrich?s messy past with his ex-wife played a starring role in a televised debate here.

?Character counts and values matter in our people and in our leaders,? he said to applause.

?I am here to ask you to help elect a man of character and decency that loves the values of this nation.?

Voters in the Palmetto State head to the polls Saturday. While Romney was until recently leading in polls here, Gingrich surpassed the former Massachusetts governor in several polls released this week.

At Friday?s rally at the Charleston Area Convention Center, Romney also trotted out another high-profile supporter to energize supporters: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

Both McDonnell and Haley are frequently mentioned as possible running mates for Romney.

Kristen Bell: How I Learned to Stop Taking "Myself Too Seriously" (omg!)

Kristen Bell: How I Learned to Stop Taking "Myself Too Seriously"

Kristen Bell is known for her bubbly personality, but according to the House of Lies star, it isn't in her nature to be so positive.

"I love my therapist. When I have an issue that I need to work through, going to therapy gives me a bigger toolbox to do so," Bell tells the February issue of Self. "Talking with friends helps, too."

PHOTO: Kristen and other stars go burlesque

"I can say crazy things to my friends, things I'm embarrassed to admit, like, 'I feel so ugly or worthless today,'" Bell explains. "They say, 'What? You're nuts!' Having good, real friends builds your self-esteem exponentially."

Bell believes she's become a stronger person thanks to her therapist. "If I'm feeling down, I have someone who I trust to help me guide my feelings and help me distinguish the real from the imaginary."

VIDEO: Kristen flirts with fiance Dax Shepard

The Veronica Mars alum admits it took some time for her to lighten up. "I did take myself too seriously in my twenties," Bell says, "but you have a series of experiences when you grow up and you have mini epiphanies where you realize you're not the most important person on the planet and life is short. I think that's really healthy."

The actress -- currently engaged to her When in Rome costar Dax Shepard -- says she's still a work in progress. "I've worked really hard to curb my natural impatience by realizing that everyone is doing the best they can."

PHOTOS: Kristen and other stasr' TV comebacks

"I'm least proud of my ability to be lazy and procrastinate by spending time on my computer or in front of the TV, watching America's Funniest Home Videos, the greatest show on television," Bell tells Self. "To anybody who pooh-poohs it, I say, 'Just give it 30 minutes.'"

Dung beetle dance provides crucial orientation cues

Thursday, January 19, 2012

The dung beetle dance, performed as the beetle moves away from the dung pile with his precious dung ball, is a mechanism to maintain the desired straight-line departure from the pile, according to a study published in the Jan. 18 issue of the online journal PLoS ONE.

The purpose of this dance, in which the beetle climbs to the top of the ball and rotates, had previously been unknown, so the authors of the PLoS ONE study, led by Emily Baird of Lund University in Sweden, investigated the circumstances that cause the beetle to dance. They found that the beetles are most likely to perform the dance before moving away from the pile, upon encountering an obstacle, or if they have lost control of the ball, suggesting that the behavior is crucial for keeping the ball moving in a straight line. Such direct, efficient navigation allows the beetle to quickly move away from the intense competition from other beetles at the dung pile. The authors propose that the beetles store a compass reading of celestial cues during the dance, which they then use to guide their straight-line trajectory.

Female Fish Attracted to Well-Fed Mates (LiveScience.com)

For some animals, looks and wealth aren't everything. Female mosquitofish prefer mates that had a steady nutritional upbringing over those that suffered a poor start in life with a restricted diet, even though the male fish are physically similar in adulthood, a new study shows.

Male mosquitofish ? an invasive species in Australia originally introduced to control mosquitoes ? born in a food-scarce environment will delay sexual maturation and undergo a period of accelerated growth when food becomes available. The fish use this strategy, called compensatory growth, to ensure that they mature to the same size as males that developed normally. Researchers found that females choose to associate with larger males, regardless of developmental history, as is the case with many other animal species. But when given the choice between two equal-size males, the females gravitate toward the males that had experienced normal growth.

The researchers are unsure how the females are able to tell the difference between the seemingly identical males, but they suggest that differences in locomotion or the relative length of genital organs (called gonopodia) may be involved.

Whatever the case, "this work demonstrates there are hidden costs to a poor start in life," study lead author Andrew Kahn, a biology graduate student at the Australian National University, said in a statement.

A selection bias

Kahn and his colleagues reared 365 newborn male mosquitofish, all of which were fed the same amount of food for their first week of life. They then put around half of the fish on a severely restricted diet for three weeks, before returning them to a normal diet until they matured.

In an aquarium with three compartments, the researchers tested 47 pairs of full-sibling brothers that were nearly identical in size but had different developmental histories. They placed one male at each end of the aquarium and a virgin female in a transparent cylinder in a central compartment.

When the researchers removed the cylinder, the now-free females were more attracted to the normal-growth males ? they spent more time staring at those males.

The effects of poor nutrition

As for how the females could pinpoint a male fish's nutritional background, various physical or other cues may be at play. Perhaps the female fish caught a glimpse of the male's genitals. Research has shown that early food limitation decreases the length of a male's gonopodia relative to his body size and other studies suggest that females prefer males with longer gonopodia.

On the other hand, the females may have been able to detect subtle differences in how the males moved, a factor also affected by developmental history in some fish species.

At the end of the day, the researchers believe the females are looking to mate with the normal males because they are likely healthier.

"If males have undergone a period of poor nutrition they might be more susceptible to diseases, which they could then pass on to the female," Kahn said. "And there are the indirect genetic reasons ? by choosing males who have had a better development history, your offspring have a good chance of being better at getting food when they are young."

The research was published Jan. 11 in the journal Biology Letters.

Checking Obama?s Assertion About Aid to Israel

2012 Presidential Campaign, Issues, News, Rick Perry, Top Stories

American aid to Israel is always a hot topic, and President Obama recently brought it back to the front burner with comments about the attitudes of three Republican candidates on his campaign web page. KUT?s Emily Donahue spoke with Gardner Selby of the Austin American-Statesman PolitiFact Texas about the Obama campaign?s assertion that ?Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich all say they would cut foreign aid to Israel ? and every other country ? to zero.?

Obama?s web post goes off the rails, PolitiFact found, in part by ignoring the context of these comments. The difference is between reconsidering each country?s U.S. aid every year by starting at zero versus concluding that every country gets nothing; that is, these Republicans? zero is a starting point for debate and conversation.
